Last year's victory for The Daily Show was so unexpected that Jon Stewart didn't even show up. Can the show take home it's ninth consecutive Emmy for Variety Series?
NOTE: While the creative ceremony already took place, these predictions were based on what I thought would happen. They were not made after the fact.
OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES
The Colbert Report
Conan
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
Real Time with Bill Maher
Saturday Night Live
The Daily Show has dominated this category for the past eight years, even after they submitted a very bland episode last year. This year they submitted the episode where Stewart lambasted Congress for holding up the Zadroga bill that would provide healthcare for 9/11 first responders and in the second segment, interviewed several first responders who were having health problems. I think it's pretty safe to say the The Daily Show will keep it's winning streak alive.
WILL WIN: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
SHOULD WIN: Real Time with Bill Maher
UPSET: Saturday Night Live
OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SPECIAL
Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On
Carrie Fisher in Wishful Drinking
The Kennedy Center Honors
Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden
The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway
While the annual reception at the Kennedy Center usually takes this one, it will probably go to Lady Gaga's insane production at the Garden.
WILL WIN: Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden
SHOULD WIN: The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway
UPSET: The Kennedy Center Honors
OUTSTANDING REALITY PROGRAM
Antiques Roadshow
Deadliest Catch
Hoarders
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List
MythBusters
Undercover Boss
The insanity of Hoarders will prove hard to resist to Emmy voters this year.
WILL WIN: Hoarders
SHOULD WIN: MythBusters
UPSET: MythBusters
OUTSTANDING REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM
The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
Project Runway
So You Think You Can Dance
Top Chef
It's a tight race between Amazing Race and Top Chef. I have a feeling that Amazing Race will reclaim it's crown.
WILL WIN: The Amazing Race
SHOULD WIN: Project Runway
UPSET: Top Chef
OUTSTANDING SPECIAL CLASS PROGRAM
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards
The 64th Annual Tony Awards
The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards
The 83rd Annual Academy Awards
The Tony's will come out on top of this competition, even if Ricky Gervais deserves to pick this one up for doing a superb job at the Golden Globes.
WILL WIN: The 64th Annual Tony Awards
SHOULD WIN: The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards
UPSET: The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards
OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES
American Idol, "Episode 1024/1025A", Directed by Gregg Gelfand
The Colbert Report, "Episode 6112", Directed by Jim Hoskinson
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, "Episode 16048", Directed by Chuck O'Neil
Late Show with David Letterman, "Episode 3333", Directed by Jerry Foley
Saturday Night Live, "Host: Justin Timberlake", Directed by Don Roy King
It's between Idol and SNL and I have a feeling that Saturday Night Live will squeak by with it's most recent season finale.
WILL WIN: Saturday Night Live, "Host: Justin Timberlake", Directed by Don Roy King
SHOULD WIN: Saturday Night Live, "Host: Justin Timberlake", Directed by Don Roy King
UPSET: American Idol, "Episode 1024/1025A", Directed by Greg Gelfand
OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SPECIAL
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, Directed by Louis J. Horovitz
The 64th Annual Tony Awards, Directed by Glenn Weiss
The 83rd Annual Academy Awards, Directed by Don Mischer
Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden, Directed by Laurieann Gibson
Sondheim! The Birthday Concert (Great Performances), Directed by Lonny Price
The effort that is put into the Tony Awards usually gets the acknowledgement from the Emmys and will probably get it again, even though this ceremony had several noticeable technical errors. Lady Gaga's special could provide the upset.
WILL WIN: The 64th Annual Tony Awards, Directed by Glenn Weiss
SHOULD WIN: The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, Directed by Louis J. Horovitz
UPSET: Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden, Directed by Laurieann Gibson
OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SERIES
The team from The Colbert Report
The team from Conan
The team from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
The team from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
The team from Saturday Night Live
The team from The Daily Show will probably win again, though Saturday Night Live could be very formidible. But if SNL couldn't win for the Betty White episode last year, then it's chances this year don't seem too hot.
WILL WIN: The team from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
SHOULD WIN: The team from The Colbert Report
UPSET: The team from Saturday Night Live
OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A VARIETY, MUSIC OR COMEDY SPECIAL
The 64th Annual Tony Awards
Written by David Boone, Matt Roberts and Mo Rocca
Colin Quinn: Long Story Short
Written by Colin Quinn
Louis C.K.: Hilarious
Written by Louis C.K.
Night of Too Many Stars: An Overbooked Benefit for Autism Education

The Real Women of SNL
Written by Paula Pell, Seth Myers, Emily Spivey and John Solomon
While the Tonys usually take any Emmy they're nominated for, they probably won't take this one. Considering that Louis C.K. is nominated for three other Emmys and that the voters have an affinity for his humor, they will probably give him a trophy for his special, even if Colin Quinn deserves it more.
WILL WIN: Louis C.K.: Hilarious, Written by Louis C.K.
SHOULD WIN: Colin Quinn: Long Story Short, Written by Colin Quinn
UPSET: The 64th Annual Tony Awards, Written by David Boone, Matt Roberts and Mo Rocca
