Creator, Steve Levitan, and the cast of Modern Family accepted the Comedy Series trophy last year. Can they do it again?
OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
Parks and Recreation
30 Rock
While Parks and Rec and Big Bang are considered the cool kids on the block, Modern Family's win in this category is almost a sure thing.
WILL WIN: Modern Family
SHOULD WIN: Parks and Recreation
UPSET: The Big Bang Theory
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carrel, The Office
Louis CK, Louie
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
Steve Carrel has been gunning for this trophy since he was first nominated in 2006. By submitting his final episode in the series, "Goodbye Michael," he has presented himself with his best chance at winning and will most likely pull it off. Louis CK could pull off a huge upset with his good episode submission, "Bully", and his show being one of the hottest currently on television.
WILL WIN: Steve Carrel, The Office
SHOULD WIN: Steve Carrel, The Office
UPSET: Louis CK, Louie
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
Laura Linney would seem to be the frontrunner with her favorable submission of the pilot episode (plus the fact that she's never lost an Emmy race), but Amy Poehler is on the hottest show on television and her submission of "Flu Season" could pull off a big surprise. Plimpton and McCarthy shouldn't be underestimated either.
WILL WIN: Laura Linney, The Big C
SHOULD WIN: Laura Linney, The Big C
UPSET: Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Chris Colfer, Glee
Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
While Colfer has undoubtedly proven himself as a great actor and deservedly won a Golden Globe in January, Ty Burrell's genius performance in his selected episodes will have him winning this award in a landslide. Ferguson and O'Neill also submitted very well, but Burrell always ends up stealing the show and it's hard to resist.
WILL WIN: Ty Burrell, Modern Family
SHOULD WIN: Chris Colfer, Glee
UPSET: Ed O'Neill, Modern Family
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES
Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Jane Lynch, Glee
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Betty White, Hot in Cleveland
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Many people have been speculating that the fever surrounding Betty White would carry over to this race and it's certainly a possibility. But Jane Lynch scored a lucky break when (in addition to her episode where her sister dies) Kristen Wiig submitted the SNL episode where Lynch actually hosted, meaning that voters will see Lynch in additional comedic scenes. But I have a feeling that voters won't want to reward a performer for two different shows. Expect Julie Bowen to stand out in this field and take home this prize.
WILL WIN: Julie Bowen, Modern Family
SHOULD WIN: Julie Bowen, Modern Family
UPSET: Jane Lynch, Glee
OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A COMEDY SERIES
How I Met Your Mother, "Subway Wars", Directed by Pamela Fryman
Modern Family, "Halloween", Directed by Michael Alan Spiller
Modern Family, "See You Next Fall", Directed by Steve Levitan
Modern Family, "Slow Down Your Neighbors", Directed by Gail Mancuso
30 Rock, "Live Show", Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller
The Emmys usually love awarding directors who helm an episode where it starts at the end and then shows the events that lead up to where the episode started. Levitan's helming of "See You Next Fall" displayed exactly that and will probably put him in the winner's circle. The live episode of 30 Rock may prove to be too tempting for the voters though.
WILL WIN: Modern Family, "See You Next Fall", Directed by Steve Levitan
SHOULD WIN: Modern Family, "See You Next Fall", Directed by Steve Levitan
UPSET: 30 Rock, "Live Show", Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller
OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES
Episodes, "Episode Seven", Written by David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik
Louie, "Poker/Divorce", Written by Louis CK
Modern Family, "Caught in the Act", Written by Steve Levitan and Jeffrey Richman
The Office, "Goodbye Michael", Written by Greg Daniels
30 Rock, "Reaganing", Written by Matt Hubbard
The "Caught in the Act" episode where the Dunphy kids walk in on their parents having intimate time together will take this prize, but the tender moments of Steve Carrel's last episode should not be counted out.
WILL WIN: Modern Family, "Caught in the Act", Written by Steve Levitan and Jeffrey Richman
SHOULD WIN: Louie, "Poker/Divorce", Written by Louis CK
UPSET: The Office, "Goodbye Michael", Written by Greg Daniels
