For the past three years, Matt Weiner and the cast of Mad Men have made accepted the Emmy for Drama Series. Can they make it a rare four consecutive times or will Boardwalk Empire get in their way?
OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
Mad Men
While Boardwalk made a very strong showing early in the year, Mad Men will almost certainly triumph for it's stellar fourth season. The fandom of FNL and the network love for The Good Wife just won't be enough to beat it.
WILL WIN: Mad Men
SHOULD WIN: Mad Men
UPSET: Friday Night Lights
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Timothy Olyphant, Justified
Ever since Mad Men aired the episode, "The Suitcase", everyone has been saying that Hamm would take home this Emmy, should he submit this episode. On Sunday night, those predictions will come true.
WILL WIN: Jon Hamm, Mad Men
SHOULD WIN: Jon Hamm, Mad Men
UPSET: Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
OUSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Kathy Bates, Harry's Law
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Mireille Enos, The Killing
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
After royally screwing up her episode submission last year (which almost certainly handed a victory to the absent Kyra Sedgwick), Julianna Margulies has submitted a perfect episode. She is the clear frontrunner but Elisabeth Moss should have an eye kept on her. Her performance in "The Suitcase" is just as good, although it is more subtle and she does at times seem to take a back seat to Jon Hamm. The real spoiler here could be Mireille Enos for her episode of The Killing in which her son goes missing in the midst of her trying to solve Rosie Larson's murder.
WILL WIN: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
SHOULD WIN: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
UPSET: Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Andre Braugher, Men of a Certain Age
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
Walton Goggins, Justified
John Slattery, Mad Men
This is probably the toughest category of the evening to predict. All the nominees, except for Braugher, submitted very wisely. I'm going to give the edge to Josh Charles for his submission of this year's season finale. Even if Goggins should get this one after being ignored for The Shield so many times.
WILL WIN: Josh Charles, The Good Wife
SHOULD WIN: Walton Goggins, Justified
UPSET: John Slattery, Mad Men
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
Michelle Forbes, The Killing
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
Kelly MacDonald, Boardwalk Empire
Margo Martindale, Justified
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
After Panjabi's surprise win last year and this category's penchant for having huge upsets, anything is possible this year. However, it would seem that Margo Martindale is the clear frontrunner for this. A veteran of television and movies, she has finally scored her first Emmy nod as regional crime matriarch, Mags Bennett. The dynamic of her performance is superb. But with this category's history, I find it trouble to put my money behind anyone on this.
WILL WIN: Margo Martindale, Justified
SHOULD WIN: Margo Martindale, Justified
UPSET: Michelle Forbes, The Killing
OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES
Boardwalk Empire, "Pilot", Directed by Martin Scorsese
Boardwalk Empire, "Anastasia", Directed by Jeremy Podeswa
The Borgias, "The Poisoned Chalice/The Assassin", Directed by Neil Jordan
The Killing, "Pilot", Directed by Patty Jenkins
Game of Thrones, "Winter is Coming (Pilot)", Directed by Tim Van Patten
This should be a no brainer. Scorsese's brilliant direction of Boardwalk's pilot will earn him a deserved Emmy to go next to his Oscar.
WILL WIN: Boardwalk Empire, "Pilot", Directed by Martin Scorsese
SHOULD WIN: Boardwalk Empire, "Pilot", Directed by Martin Scorsese
UPSET: Game of Thrones, "Winter is Coming (Pilot)", Directed by Tim Van Patten
OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES
Friday Night Lights, "Always", Written by Jason Katims
Game of Thrones, "Baelor", Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
The Killing, "Pilot", Written by Veena Sud
Mad Men, "Blowing Smoke", Written by Andre Jacquemetton and Maria Jacquemetton
Mad Men, "The Suitcase", Written by Matthew Weiner
Like the previous category, there is no doubt about who will win this. Matt Weiner's excellent episode, "The Suitcase", will take this one.
WILL WIN: Mad Men, "The Suitcase", Written by Matthew Weiner
SHOULD WIN: Mad Men, "The Suitcase", Written by Matthew Weiner
UPSET: Friday Night Lights, "Always", Written by Jason Katims
